Welcome to the first official newsletter on my SIDEQUESTING era!

And what better way to kick it off than by unpacking what this word actually means?

According to Merriam Webster’s definition, a “side quest” is an “activity that is secondary to one's main endeavor” aka “a secondary pursuit, career, or activity.”

If you scroll down the page, it also talks about where “side quest” comes from:

Side quest comes from video games, in which it is a separate (often shorter) option to play through in a game, one that is independent of the main quest in a game.”

I guess if you played Super Mario back in the day, then a side quest might be entering one of those secret, hidden routes to find more items and prizes to pick up along the way. That’s the only gaming reference you’re going to get out of me because I’m not a big gamer, hahaha.

In the next article I stumbled upon, “The Art of Sidequesting and the Importance of Adding Whimsy into your Life” by Diksha M, a sidequest is defined below:

“A sidequest is a deviation from the ordinary” and is “an enjoyable activity that adds flavour to one’s life, not necessarily contributing to the “larger goal”.”

- Diksha M, Her Campus

Love it!!

Honestly, it’s so interesting that a sidequest is supposedly a smaller goal outside your main mission. But why can’t we live a life filled with multiple sidequests (*cough* me at the moment lol)

Behind the scenes, I’m currently juggling:

  • Running 1:1 career coaching sessions

  • Marketing + growing my self-paced course

  • Creating free resources for my community

  • Sharing cringey and unhinged posts on my socials

  • Supporting startups with marketing projects

  • Creating UGC reels for local Aussie brands

  • Raising my rambunctious toddler

  • Finding my spark

And more!

OOF. I don't know if any of these are the main quest.

But if I had to choose a mission, it would probably be: creating a meaningful life for my family and helping others do the same. 🙂

What are some of your sidequests and do those contribute to your main mission? Would love to hear what you’ve been working on (or what you’d like to work on in the future!).

All righty, have the best day and go have fun sidequesting! 💃🏻

xo, Kim
